MD/DC Chapter News            February 22, 2002 

The Maryland/District of Columbia Chapter of ERAPPA held it’s Spring meeting on February 22, 2002, at the Blackburn Center at Howard University in Washington, D.C.  

The meeting opened with a welcome address by Dr. A. Toy Caldwell-Colbert, Provost from Howard University.  Following the welcome address, three concurrent educational sessions were held.  The topics of these sessions included:

• A panel discussion based on lessons learned in building design and construction.  The panel consisted of:
• Alden Bradstock, P.E.  Siegel, Rutherford, Bradstock and Ridgeway, Inc. Consulting Engineers.
• Paul Sugar, Esq., Ober, Kaler, Grimes and Shriver
• Joseph Tattoni, AIA, Amos, Bailey and Arnold
• Chander Bhan, Asst. Director Operations and Maintenance at Howard University, Moderator

 This discussion focused on the recent completion of the Louis Stokes Library at Howard University.

• Emergency Preparedness - How ready are you for “IT”?  A post September 11^th panel discussion concerning the impact of these tragic events on college and university campuses.  The panel consisted of:
• Robert Rowan, Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
• Joe Beres, Director of Environmental Health and Safety at The Catholic University of America.
• Reginald Smith, Sr., Chief of Campus Police at Howard University.
• Carey Baldwin, Executive Director Physical Facilities Management at Howard University, Moderator.
• A Real “FISH” Story – Creating Excitement in the Workplace.  The session was presented by Wally Glasscock from Glasscock Development and Training.

Our next planned event will be a two-day retreat that will be held at Rocky Gap Resort near Cumberland, Maryland.  The title of this meeting will be ”Measure up at Rocky Gap II”.   Robin Lawton, author of the book "Creating a Customer-Centered Culture:  Leadership in Quality, Innovation, and Speed" will present a two-day workshop on his modeled approach for applying the quality-based methods and technologies developed for the manufacturing industry to those of us involved in service work.

Plan now to attend our Fall 2002 meeting that will be held at the University of Maryland, College Park.  This meeting will be held on September 20, 2002.
