MD/DC APPA is pleased to offer APPA’s Supervisor’s Toolkit Program, Tuesday, July 20 through Friday, July 23, 2010, at The George Washington University.

Supervisor’s Toolkit: Nuts and Bolts of Facilities Supervision is a program designed and developed by APPA. It is a seven-module program, presented over approximately thirty-two hours.  This is a unique program, taught by master and qualified trainers, and is tailored specifically for educational facilities professionals.  The content provides a strong foundation for new or less experienced supervisors, yet it also benefits all levels of supervisors, managers and directors who have never had formal supervisory training or who may benefit from a refresher course.  The facilitators for this program will be Michelle Frederick, Manager/Training & Organizational Development, American University, and Nancy Yeroshefsky, Assistant Director, Facilities Human Resources & Payroll, University of Maryland College Park.

All participants will be provided with an official Toolkit Participant Guide and handouts from which they will work during the training. Each workbook remains the property of the participant. Certificates of Completion, as well as 3.0 continuing education units (CEUs), are provided by APPA for each participant completing the training program. (Participants are required to complete the four days of training to receive their certificate and CEUs.)

Course Description

Module 1: Supervision — What Is It?

Learn to define effective facilities supervision; identify the roles and responsibilities of supervisors; and understand four key functions of supervision.

 

Module 2: It’s More Than “Adminis-trivia”

Learn to understand the supervisor's role in administering organizational policy and procedures; recognize the legal considerations in the facilities environment; and gain an awareness of resource management.

 

Module 3: Communication — Let’s Talk!

Identify barriers to effective communication; demonstrate communication skills; and understand your role in the communication process.

 

Module 4: If It Weren’t for the People

Understand the importance of developing and maintaining effective relationships with others in the workplace; examine the different types of relationships that exist in the workplace; and identify strategies and skills for improving relationships with others.

 

Module 5: Motivation and Performance

Identify methods of training and developing employees; ascertain methods of positive reinforcement; and understand the importance of performance management and evaluation.

 

Module 6: Customer Service Triangle

Learn to create a basic understanding of the three major aspects of customer service process, experience, and recovery; examine the role of the supervisor in customer service; and help participants identify areas for improvement in service delivery in their organizations.

 

Module 7: Leadership — Tools for Success

Master techniques to understand critical elements of leadership; transition from managing, to managing and leading; and understand your own preferred leadership style.

Campus Parking & Directions – Foggy Bottom Campus

Parking:  Follow the directions below to the University Parking Garage; the entrance is located on “I” Street between 22nd and 23rd Streets.  Your facilitators will provide you with a daily, pre-paid pass that will allow you to leave the garage without paying the fee (presently $17/day).

Directions: 

Metro:   The Foggy Bottom-GWU Metro station is located on campus. It offers access to Metro’s Blue and Orange lines.

Driving Directions

From North:
  • Interstate 95 South to Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway) toward Silver Spring/Northern Virginia
  • Take Exit 33, heading south on Connecticut Avenue for about 9 miles
  • Turn right onto Florida Avenue (just past the Washington Hilton) and then turn left immediately onto 21st Street
  • Turn right on I Street
  • The visitor entrance to the University Parking Garage is on the left between 22nd and 23rd Streets
From Northwest:
  • Interstate 270 to Interstate 495 (Capital Beltway) toward Silver Spring
  • Take Exit 33, heading south on Connecticut Avenue for about 9 miles
  • Follow directions as shown above in “From North”
From West:
  • Interstate 66 and Route 50 both connect with the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge
  • Cross the bridge and exit left at E Street, then again at Virginia Avenue
  • Bear left, following signs for 23rd Street
  • Turn right on 23rd Street and continue a few blocks to campus
  • Turn right on I Street
  • The visitor entrance to the University Parking Garage is on the right between 22nd and 23rd Streets
From South:
  • Interstate 95 to Interstate 395, Arlington Memorial Bridge Exit
  • Cross the bridge and bear left at the Lincoln Memorial
  • Turn left onto 23rd Street, NW, and follow directions as shown above in “From West”
